How the Merle Gene Came to Pembroke Welsh Corgis

Traditionally, Merle colouring does not occur naturally in Pembroke Welsh Corgi’s. The pattern originates from Cardigan welsh Corgis, where the Merle gene is recognized and accepted.

Breeders have introduced the Merle gene into Pembrokes by crossing them with Cardigans and then selectively breeding back to Pembroke lines, until they retain Pembroke traits with the Merle coat. These dogs are often called “American Merles” or “merle Pembrokes.”

Cardigan vs Pembroke Welsh Corgis

Cardigan and Pembroke Welsh corgi’s may look similar at first glance, but are two very distinct breeds with different history, characteristics, and breed standards.
Cardigan welsh corgis, are older of the two breeds and trace back to over 3000 years ago in wales. Pembroke welsh corgis, were likely introduced in the 10th century in Walesand both where bred as herding dogs, being recognized as separate breeds by the UK kennel club in 1934.

The Controversy of
Merle Breeding

There’s controversy around Merle breeding, mostly stemming from misinformation. It’s crucial to understand the risks associated with breeding two Merles.

Responsible breeders never breed two Merles together to avoid the risk of double Merles, which can lead to health issues like deafness and blindness.

Why Understanding these Differences is Important

Understanding the difference between Pembrokes and Cardigans is key to making an informed decision. A Merle Corgi can be an amazing companion, but it’s important to keep in mind:

  • Work with breeders who DNA test their dogs
  • Understand Merle Pembrokes may not be eligible for AKC and CKC registration
  • Focus on temperament, health, amd honesty over labels
